Gary Gygax, 'Father of D&D,' Dies at 69

Gary Gygax, one of the co-creators of the Dungeons & Dragons role-playing game, died Tuesday morning at his home in Lake Geneva, Wisconsin, according to Stephen Chenault, CEO of Troll Lord Games.

Gygax designed the original D&D game with Dave Arneson in 1974, and went on to create the Dangerous Journeys and Lejendary Adventure RPGs, as well as a number of board games. He also wrote several fantasy novels.

"I don't think I've really grokked it yet," said Mike Mearls, the lead developer of the upcoming 4th edition of Dungeons and Dragons. "He was like the cool uncle that every gamer had. He shaped an entire generation of gamers."

Gygax was not directly involved with Dungeons & Dragons after 1985, and his relationship with his former company, TSR Inc., was not friendly at first. The company sued him over his competing game Dangerous Journeys, and in a 2004 interview with GameSpy he stated that he was "pleased to say" that he thought the cost of the suit and settlement drove TSR to sell the rights to the game.

While reportedly unimpressed with the current edition of the Dungeons and Dragons game, he created adventures and settings that could be used with it, which were published by Troll Lord Games.

Gygax went well beyond the role of game developer and became an icon to gamers, appearing as himself in episodes of Futurama and Code Monkeys and participating in discussions on roleplaying-related message boards.

Gygax had been in poor health for some time, according to his wife Gail. Chenault says he will publish more information, including funeral arrangements, on the Troll Lord message board as it becomes available.

(in previous years, these have included invader zim, buffy the vampire slayer/any joss whedon canon, and harry potter.) our signature event is called fanfiction bedtime stories. it's basically an open mic where folks can read their fanfics to a room of supportive folks (sitting on blankets on the floor in their pj's with snacks and toys). the highlight of ffbs i call "Fanfic Theatre," wherein folks actually COSPLAY their fanfics. it's really fun........if anyone would like to either come to one of our conventions, get involved in planning, or submit works for contests or to be read aloud or cosplayed, let me know. also, if anyone knows of anywhere else comparable activities take place, please refer me there. many blessings! oh and p.s.....at cons that permit, we have after-hours adult fanfic bedtime stories for nc-17 readings.

Hello you guys!

I have been promoting our film madly - I've created
fliers to post, little 'cards' to hand out to people,
and I've sent out batches of emails in groups (I still
have lots more to send out!).

The only way we are going to win is if we ALL promote
like MAD! Below I have copied the email I sent out to
the Whaddya group - use it or change it to suit your
needs. I've attached the flier and 'cards' - you can
change them or use them as is. Please tell EVERYONE
YOU KNOW! Make sure they rate it!!! There are many
problems with the mac site - the main ones that affect
us are
1. You can't search by our movie name - it doesn't
work.
2. Using the email to a friend function on our page
sends a link that doesn't work (or it didn't last time
I checked).
3. The only thing that seems to work is searching by
our team name -
whaddyagonnadoaboutit

Whaddya Gonna Do About It? team entered the
Insomnia Film Festival
Turn 24 hours into a
3-minute masterpiece

The list of elements were given out at 9am EST on
October 13th, we shot at 3 locations, our visual
effects master Andrew Coggeshall was importing and
working while we set up for the next shots. I was
importing footage into Final Cut by 6pm. By 2am I had
picture-lock and I handed off to John Madden for
scoring. Dana Jae proved to be the marathan champion
by mixing and compressing at the wee hours of the
morning to get it uploaded by 9am EST on October 14th.

It was a fantastic learning experience - and we ended
up with a pretty cool little movie. AND WE NEED YOUR
HELP TO WIN!!! There were 3000 entries this year, so
competition will be tough. You can help by watching
and rating movies - the 25 entries with the highest
rating on November 9 at 12:00 a.m. EST will be
screened by industry professionals, including Barry
Sonnenfeld, James Mangold, and Nora Ephron. The
biggest hit with either the public or the pros, each
member of the team will receive a MacBook Pro with
Final Cut Studio 2, Logic Studio, and Shake! THIS
PRIZE WILL HELP US MAKE MORE MOVIES!

So... I encourage you to check it out! Please tell
all of your friends & family, too! You have to create
a Mac ID - if you have ever ordered from Mac or
iTunes, you already have one. You will also need
Quicktime Player - available for free download at Mac.

Whaddya Gonna Do About It? Productions presents...
8 3/4
Please watch and rate it by going to
http://edcommunity. apple.com/ insomnia_ fall07/
in the search field enter our team name:
whaddyagonnadoaboutit
8 and 3/4 will come up, click to watch

I would love to hear your comments! Thanks!

Intro to the article;
" I've read recently that geeks make better lovers because they are so unaccustomed to romance that they will do anything for their mates. Also because geeks don't have the social skills to cheat (wanna bet?).

Yeah, ha ha, let's chuckle at the stereotypes. Might as well add that geeks won't waste valuable relationship time watching football. Or that geeks are clueless and fashion-impaired and have the social skills of a bowl of fruit.

But you know what? Humorous Top-10 lists aside, geeks really do make the best lovers, for reasons that have nothing to do with adolescent ostracism or puppy-like devotion. "

I have a Mac laptop, but I figure that the solution can be found by somebody who has any real experience with ANY type of computer, I don't think it matters what brand it is for this problem I've been having. And, since this is the only tribe that I'm a member of that has a geeky theme, I thought I'd try my chances.

A while back, I spilled beer on my computer (the perils of partying in the same room that your computer is) and fried the DC converter board and my motherboard. No problem, I ordered replacements, and had them installed without a problem. While I had my computer opened up, I decided to upgrade from a 1.33 GHz to 1.5GHz processor. Everything seemed to be working just fine. Well, a few days later, my track pad (mouse pad, or whatever you wanna call it) stopped working. I figured it had just gotten corroded or something, since that was where the beer had actually entered my computer. I reopened my computer, and reconnected the track pad cable (thinking it had come loose) and it worked again... for a little while. Finally, it stopped working altogether, so I ordered a whole new upper case assembly, complete with a brand new track pad and cable. Well, after installing it, my trackpad and the button that goes with it still don't work. Does this suggest a problem with the motherboard maybe? I was thinking about wiping my HD and reinstalling the OS, but that seems like a huge effort with a small chance of actually helping. Anybody have any ideas that might be simpler than reinstalling the OS, and cheaper than buying yet another new motherboard?

Thank you for visiting CostumeRating.com and AmIPeriodOrNot.com. In the past 18 months, we have tried to provide a haven for costumers, re-enactors, roleplayers, actors and other costume junkies to show off their talents and toys.

Unfortunately, due to the difficulties in providing a format which would allow everyone a place for their own timeline or specialty, along with addressing issues of security and protecting against anonymous trolling, the site turned out to be too bulky and clumsy to navigate. As a result, the costume community has stayed away in droves.

As a result, we at CostumeRating.com and AmIPeriodOrNot.com have decided that the site we built simply isn’t going to provide the necessary framework to make everyone happy. Therefore, we found it necessary to take the site down…
ALL NEW AND IMPROVED CostumeRating.com and AmIPeriodOrNot.com!!!

That’s right. We fixed it.
New features include ONE login to access the ENTIRE site.

Users may upload up to 100 DIFFERENT pictures, into any timeline(s) they wish!
Users may edit pictures, search for specific pictures, search for specific users, post to a variety of forums, comment, and create their own weblogs, along with a “Mix and Match feature, just for fun!

I only remember tidbits about the game. I know the title was a long name (like 3 or four words) I also know that you start off in a house with several other characters. You can choose which character you want to be and are able to change to another character at anytime. I also know that each character has a unique way to play them. Plus you also go down into a dungeon where to get through the dungeon you have to use the characters to there fullest potential. One character could jump very high. One character could push blocks etc.

Any help on this would be apprectiated. I know very hard game to find out.

Of course I did have to point out, if it came down to eating them that I in no way could be responsilbe for the butchering of said animal.
Morpheus: The Matrix is everywhere, it is all around us. Even now, in this very room. You can see it when you look out your window, or when you turn on your television. You can feel it when you go to work, or when go to church or when you pay your taxes. It is the world that has been pulled over your eyes to blind you from the truth.
Neo: What truth?
Morpheus: That you are a slave, Neo. Like everyone else, you were born into bondage, born inside a prison that you cannot smell, taste, or touch. A prison for your mind. (long pause, sighs) Unfortunately, no one can be told what the Matrix is. You have to see it for yourself. This is your last chance. After this, there is no turning back.
(In his left hand, Morpheus shows a blue pill.)
Morpheus: You take the blue pill and the story ends. You wake in your bed and believe whatever you want to believe. (a red pill is shown in his other hand) You take the red pill and you stay in Wonderland and I show you how deep the rabbit-hole goes. (Long pause; Neo begins to reach for the red pill) Remember -- all I am offering is the truth, nothing more.
(Neo takes the red pill and swallows it with a glass of water)

So which would you take and why???

When I first came to this tribe I was looking for a real life muse. I still am, BUT I have made a movie (30 shorts that combine to make 1 feature actually) full of muses. hmmm, that's a bit awkward. Ok, basically, I want to hear from the most intelligent tribe on Tribe (YOU ALL (US)) about this TV show (educational/documentary) that I have made and is going on air in San Francisco (8/23 1pm & 8/24 10pm on CH27 in SF only). Because I want to make the next one even better (this one is really good though! :) ) So, what it is is.....

A 30 minute educational/documentary about my project 30 films in 30 days will be on Channel 27 on Wednesday 8/23 at 1pm, and Thursday 8/24 at 10pm. This airing is sadly only available inside San Francisco on Cable (EATV), but it has already aired 4 times on the 127 outlets in the state of California that are supplied by the CCCSAT satellite (we got picked up in April, aired in April and May).
I would be most grateful for viewers, and following that, any feedback that might make future projects quality.
This is a very exciting thing for all of us here, and hopefully is one of the many fractured introductions that Whaddya Gonna Do About It? Productions have been leaking out for the last few years.
Our first feature, which predates 30.30 by one year, will be releasing soon, so there is a huge amount of product in the pipeline coming out soon for those who like our styles.

This was a history making endeavor that has been universally reacted to with shock and awe. No one in history had ever attempted to make 30 films in 30 days, but we attempted and succeeded.

Please support this and forward to as many people as you can. A single shot is all most of us will ever get... I have been very fortunate, blessed really, to be able to achieve some of my dreams, but they need to be shared with an audience, and there is no better audience than that of my peers and fellow artists.

Thank you very very sincerely.
New device could end gap-toothed hockey smiles

Updated Wed. Jun. 28 2006 11:03 PM ET

CTV.ca News Staff

A Canadian invention may make the gap-toothed smiles so closely associated with the sport of ice hockey a thing of the past. And it happened by chance.

Prof. Tarek El-Bialy, a member of the University of Alberta's faculty of medicine and dentistry, was researching jaw growth in rats.

"Accidentally when I applied the ultra sound I saw the lower incisors grow," he told CTV News. "It was an interesting, unbelievable growth."

He then came up with the concept of low-intensity pulsed ultrasound as a means of repairing dental tissue by gently massaging the root of a broken tooth.

The result was a device that has the ability to re-grow lost teeth -- a common casualty of professional ice hockey where players are not required to wear cages or visors.

But the technology was far too bulky and needed to be used for a year to generate results. So he teamed up with Jie Chen, an associate engineering professor, in order to find a way to make the technology smaller and more user-friendly.

Another colleague, Ying Tsui, an associate professor of engineering at the university, was also brought on board for the design.

The result is a tiny device that won't be exclusive to toothless hockey players.

"Everyone will be able to use this -- from the hockey player to the child who knocked out a tooth," Chen, also a member of the university's National Institute for Nanotechnology, told the Globe and Mail

The three have since filed a patent on the device.

And although it's still in the prototype stages, the tiny device is expected to be on the market within two years.

It will be designed to be mounted on a set of braces or on a plastic removable crown, and will need to be activated for 20 minutes each day for about four weeks in order to generate noticeable results.

The inventors say it will have the ability to re-grow teeth and stimulate jawbone growth to straighten out smiles - even for hockey players.

"It would have a fantastic practical application," said Dr. Anthony Sneazwell, team dentist for the Edmonton Oilers, who has seen more than his share of missing teeth.

Canadian and American regulatory groups have already approved the device, but it will probably take two years for the patent to be approved.

With a report from CTV's Deborah Shiry

Alright then, what made you a "hot" geek rather than just a geeky geek? (which isn't to say you couldn't be a geeky geek and also be hot...)--Don't be shy... toot your own horn:

The older I get the less I care how geeky I am.

I've learned that a party or a bar can be a blast... even just the "shallow" stuff.

I love a good conversation and will remember just about everything YOU say.

After geeking out through my high school career I got into shape and found out (by accident) that I was a better athlete than I thought.

I can genuinely say that girls aren't scarey (some individuals are, however)

I drive fast & eat slow.

I've been told that I look like "Deacon Frost" from Blade... only hot if you're a geek-girl... who likes vampires or superheroes.

I know what I'm looking for in a woman.

I almost never get genuinely angry.

The difference between indigo and violet are pretty obvious to me (depending on who you are that either makes me hot or gay).

---
The way I see it the biggest thing that makes a hot-geek hot is a recognition that being a geek doesn't mean you aren't hot.
